Sutherlin Ag Students Attend Leadership Conference

Sutherlin done did ‘er at the Douglas County Leadership Conference! Nearly all students taking an agriculture class, about 130 SHS studnets, went to the Douglas County Fairgrounds for two days. There were approximately six hundred students attending the conference, from ten different schools throughout the region

The conference taught students valuable life skills such as teamwork and goal setting. Those attending were also taught to strive for personal success and achievement throughout life.  Participants were taught by motivational speakers and leaders that presented ideas to encourage student to be above and beyond "the average". Students were told to look onto the next thing in life, not to dwell on the past, and look into the future.

Students were able to take many important skills and learning tools away from the conference that they will be able to apply in their own life. An example is that SLANT, which stands for, for sit up, lean forward, ask questions, nod, and sit in the T-Zone (the front two rows of the classroom) will help students concentrate in class, be more focused, and able to achieve academic success!

Students attended free of charge, thanks to the generous support of several local groups.  Our thanks goes to Lilja Foundation, Ford Family Foundation, Whipple Foundation, Oregon Education Association, Douglas County Farmers Co-op, Rotary Market Auction Committee, Douglas County Farm Bureau, Umpqua Community College and the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

State Fair!

The Sutherlin FFA had three members go to Salem to compete in the Oregon State Fair. Austin Powell, Ross Grauf, and Adam Powell all competed in both Dairy Showman/Conformation and the Austin, Ross and Adamlivestock judging competition. They all did very well with Austin placing Grand Champion in commercial dairy and Adam being Reserve Grand Champion. Ross did very well in both events, placing first in his yearling hiefer class, and did very well in showmanship too.

When doing Livestock Judging CDE at the state level each member judges eight classes and gives three sets of reasons. This year the reasons were on breeding heifers, market lambs and breeding gilts. Sutherlin FFA was 18th overall in the Advance Competition.

Sutherlin FFA Celebrating After 2009 County Fair

The Sutherlin FFA is still "celebrating what's great" after the 2009 Douglas County Fair.  Sutherlin was one of the six Douglas County FFA chapters who participated and competed in various areas of this year's fair, ranging from the traditional livestock shows to public presentations.  A summary of achievements is below.

- Ross Grauf was champion FFA dairy showman and competed in the FFA Round Robin.

- Adam Powell and Tessa Knight made the advanced champion beef showman round, as well as Reserve Champion Novice Showman Kacie McCracken.  Also showing market steers were Austin Powell, Tessa Miller, and Jeb Schumacher.  Sutherlin FFA had 6 of the 12 FFA market steers.

- Nicole Ritson was Reserve Champion Beginning FFA Swine Showman.  Colleen O'Meara also exhibited in the market hog show.

- Lindsay Needham was second in the crossbred ewe lamb class, and was helped all week in showing and herdsmanship by Chaela Outlaw.

- Lana Chamberlain was Champion in FFA Presentations and Tessa Knight was Reserve.  Tessa and Adam both conducted the FFA/4H Awards Presentation on Saturday.

- Sutherlin FFA was first in the newly-revived Chapter Landscape Exhibit.  The Sutherlin exhibit, Oakland exhibit, and Glide exhibit all looked fantastic in Douglas Hall and earned many compliments. Sutherlin FFA also had the Champion medium-construction project with the sheep show stand built by several FFA members in the ag shop.

- Sutherlin FFA was first in beginning and advanced Dairy Judging.  Sixteen Sutherlin FFA members competed in Dairy and Livestock Judging, including Lana Chamberlain, Adam Powell, Austin Powell, Alex Powell, Jerry Risk, Andrew Beattie, Juan Vazquez, Kacie McCracken, Nicole Ritson, Jesilyn Risk, Colleen O'Meara, Lindsay Needham, Chaela Outlaw, Jeb Schumacher, Tessa Miller, and Rozalyn  Patrick.
