Sutherlin FFA Attends National Convention

Sutherlin FFA made the 1,800 mile journey to the 2010 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indianna October 18 through the 24. Throughout the week, members attented various workshops and the Environmental and Natural Resources team competed in the national CDE.

Natinoal ConventionEnvironmental and Natural Resources is a Career Deveoplment Event in which members compete in various practicums and also adress global issues. The ENR team was Austin Powell, Adam Powell, Jessica Warren, and Jerry Risk. On the first day of the two day competition, competitors wrote press releases, completed a seven minute interview on bio-contamination, and did a team activity tackling the situation of a Gulf oil spill. Day two consisted of a knowledge test, identification, water quality testing, soils, environmental analysis, and GPS tracking. The team placed ninth in the nation and received gold honors. Adam Powell and Jerry Risk received silver honors and Ausitn Powell and Jessica Warren received gold honors.

Other members who atended were Lana Chamberlain, Andrew Beattie, Tiffany Rosemeyer, and Colleen O'Meara. While the others competed, these members attended various workshops. Interviewing Like a Star was a workshop where members learned all about preparing themselves for an interview. Techniques, skills, follow ups, and valuable resources are all key areas of an interview that were highlighted in the workshop. Another workshop that was attended was Gut Check, which was a reality check when it comes to money management, independance, and working. Other workshops include Organic Farming, Careers is Equine Science, Community Service, and Being Sincere.

Along with great workshops there were great keynote speakers. Josh Shipp is he host of the TV show JUMP SHIPP, author of "The Teens Guide to World Domination", named a CNN Young Person Who Rocks, and was listed on INC. Magazine's 30 Under 30 list. Josh put on an extremely funny and entertaining inspirational comedy about not being average, making positive choices, striving to be YOUR best, and a goat. Judson Laipply, also known as the the creator of The Evolution of Dance, spoke about how to get off that "bus" when nothing is going your way. He topped off  his inspirational comdey by performing The Evolution of Dance, one of the most all time viewed Youtubes videos.

The group had tons of fun away from convention too. With Indianapolis being the racing capital of the world, a trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a must do. Also keeping it Indy themed, go-kart racing was a highlight of the trip. A visit to Indianapolis's premeir huanted house, Fright Manor, topped it all off. It was a great, fun filled week that the Sutherlin FFA Chapter is looking forward to repeating next year.

Umpqua District Leadership Camp was "Kinda a Big Deal"

The 2010 Upmqua District Leadership camp was held at the Little River Christian camp in Glide, Oregon September 11-13 with this years theme being "We're Kinda a Big Deal". The State officers ran sucessful workshops and groups teaching members all about teamwork and uniting your chapter as one.

Sutherlin had a great turnout this year with 25 members attending camp. Great work to Kasse Freeman, Juan Vazquez, and Jerry Risk who all placed first on their rituals teams. Lana Chamberlain took second in prepared public speaking and Chris Warren placed second in rituals. Others who attended camp were Kiana Gorla, Heather Wright, Shania Wallis, Christy Chamberlain, Alex Powell, Adam Powell, Austin Powell, Madi Powell, Caylin Hobgood, Kim Edwards, Jessica Warren, Jessica Freeman, Kayla Mosley, Roz Patrick, Austin Hoobler, Kylee Carson, and Andrew Beattie. Great work to everyone.

Sutherlin Shows Up, Stands Out at Douglas County Fair

Sutherlin FFA was well represented at the 2010 Douglas County Fair. Sixteen members exhibited livestock, as well other entries in ag mechanics and a landscape exhibit.

 

Cattle
Brandon Anderson was Reserve FFA Champion Conformation and Austin Powell was Reserve Grand Champion Showman.  Both won their conformation classes.  Adam Powell and Tessa Knight were second in conformation classes.  All four came back for the champion drive, making up half of the final round.  Kacie McCracken and Trevor Taylor were each third in their classes.  Ross Grauf had the Champion Showmanship and Champion Female in Dairy and competed in the FFA Round Robin Master Showmanship.

State Convention 2010

Sutherlin FFA results from the 2010 Oregon FFA State Convention:

 

-          Parliamentary Procedure took 4th Place (Jessica Warren, Adam Powell, Tessa Knight, Jerry Risk, Jesilyn Risk, Austin Powell)

-          Sutherlin FFA received 2nd in state in the Ag Youth Awareness Award for promoting agricultural literacy

-          Superior Chapter Award and 10+10 Recruitment Recognition

-          Adam Powell was elected Umpqua District President and Rozalyn Patrick was elected District Vice President for 2010-2011.

-          Tessa Knight competed in the sub-state Advanced Public Speaking CDE (top 8 in the state)

-          Jessica Warren competed in the preliminary Job Interview CDE (top 12 in the state)

-          Ag Marketing also competed, the team consisting of Lana Chamberlain, Alex Powell, and Colleen O’Meara

-          Ashley McDiffitt competed in the Co-op Quiz and interview, demonstrating knowledge about agricultural business

-          Andrew Beattie, Christopher Warren, and Bethany Spelgatti all served on award selection committees, interviewing candidates from across the state for various awards.

-          Rozalyn Patrick also served on the State Officer Nominating Committee, interviewing and slating the 2010-2011 State Officer Team.  This involved nearly 36 hours of work in 2.5 days with 11 other student leaders from across Oregon.

 

Students also received tours of the College of Veterinary Medicine and some of the OSU Animal Science Department facilities.
