The Sutherlin FFA Plant Care Guide

Members Live to Serve as They Drive Away Hunger

LS

FFA is known for its service and care for issues affecting the world. Currently, there are over 700 million people in the world who are malnourished, so Oregon FFA has chosen to help “Drive Away Hunger” through a statewide food drive initiative partnered by Les Schwab Tires. FFA Chapters and Les Schwab businesses across the entire state collect funds and food donations that are send to local food pantries and those in need.

Recently, Sutherlin FFA took part in the initiative by dropping of donation bags around the community and picking up food donations in them. The Sutherlin Les Schwab Tires also placed location bins in their building for customers to donate in. Cassidy Leatherwood, Sutherlin FFA Chapter Vice President, describes her experience, “ I think it’s important that as an agriculture based program we take care of feeding the world, and this community service program does just that.”

Sutherlin FFA members are collecting canned food in partner with Les Schwab Tires.

Part of the National FFA Organization’s motto is the line “living to serve”. As FFA members, we want to serve our communities in the best way we know how. Every year, Oregon FFA serves its community through a statewide food drive in partnership with Les Schwab Tire Stores.

The food drive is very simple. Each FFA chapter across Oregon partners with its local Les Schwab Tire Store with the goal of bringing in 500 pounds worth of food. Those chapters that reach the 500 pound mark will be recognized at the FFA State Convention. The chapter will receive paper bags from their local Les Schwab to distribute throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. Local residents can choose to fill the bags with any canned goods they have and leave them out the following week for the members to pick back up and take to the Les Schwab store. In addition, bins will be set up at the Les Schwab Tire Stores for anyone who wishes to bring food directly in. Cash and checks can also be given as donation, and every $ 0.50 equates to one pound of food. All the collected food and proceeds will be given to local food banks.

The Sutherlin FFA Chapter is taking part in this event and will be distributing bags this Friday, Oct. 6th and will be picking up the bags again next Friday, Oct. 13th. Please visit the Sutherlin Les Schwab Tire Store if you wish to donate, but do not receive a back on your door.

Fun at the Douglas County Home Show!

On March 5, Sutherlin FFA, Sutherlin Woodshop, and Sutherlin Technology were stationed at the Fairgrounds for the Douglas County Home Show, a place to show people around Douglas County the amazing things that people have been working on. This year, the display, made up of student pieces, was a hit, bringing in the curious gazes of many passersby.

Students helped out by educating people about the woodshop, agriculture, and technology programs, as well as taking their contact information if they were interested in getting a piece made.

Usually, Home Show, which only lasts one day, is just a small display. This year, there were many new things, including a nice trailer, made by Cameron Lemke and Carlos Lopez, vinyl printing, and a running laser throughout the entire day.

Minute-for-minute and hour-for-hour, the Douglas County Home Show was a great day of learning and experience for the Douglas County community. New things were learned, old things were remembered, and memories were made.
